Gilles Saussier
Gilles Saussier propose depuis la fin des années 1990 une activité ouverte, construite autour d’un nombre choisi de projets documentaires et de corpus d’images (Living in the fringe, Studio Shakhari bazar, Envers des villes, endroit des corps, Le tableau de chasse…) que l’artiste revisite, entrecroise et recompose sans cesse pour en enrichir la lecture et l’actualité. Il a participé à la Documenta 11 de Kassel en 2002, à l’exposition Covering the real au Kunstmuseum de Bâle en 2005, à l’exposition L’archive universelle. la condition du document et l’utopie photographique moderne (2008) au MACBA de Barcelone. Il a notamment publié Living in the fringe (Figura, Paris 1998) Situations du reportage, actualité d’une alternative documentaire (Communications, n°71, Paris 2001), et Studio Shakhari bazar (Le point du jour éditeur, Paris 2006). Les projets de Gilles Saussier entrecroisent les genres de la photographie documentaire et de l’art conceptuel, et engagent la photographie en tant qu’acte performatif et non pas simplement image ou information.

Gilles Saussier accompanies those who live in landscapes or cross through them. What interests him is the way landscapes become a territory, an object for individual or collective appropriation, on the fringe of the great logic of national and regional development and industrial agriculture. Photojournalist with the Gamma agency from 1989 to 1994, he covered events such as the Rumanian uprising in Timisoara, the first Golf War and the 1991 cyclone in Bangladesh, a country he then returned to several times and where he lived for two years. The Studio Shakari Bazar documents just as much the story of the people in this district of the Dhaka old town as that of the photographer himself. The same goes for his Retour au pays in the Epte Valley (a project presented at the Documenta XI) and the portraits of a sociologically complex population, that of the area surrounding Paris (île-de-France). Photography works like a documentary here, neither solely anthropological, nor solely artistic.
